As written, it not only involves dice and imagination, but also poker chips, playing cards, maps, and minis. A point-spend mechanic simply feels like it meshes with design philosophy of the system better -- plus, I really think spending "social currency" would fill that itch some gamers get to spend imaginary gold pieces better than just having authorial fiat. There's some genuine old-school fun to be had from resource management.<br /><br />In any case, I certainly wouldn't complain about any GM who just decides to give the players that kind of free rein.
